  • Day 1 of Toronto Trip

Flying into Hamilton on a rainy day was fun. Greeted by rain without a coat, but that was no big deal, I don't mind any weather.

I think I should have brought a rain coat to Hamilton. Landed late, but safely. Now about to meet @REbroker_Jenn! #yhm

Had some Carribean food at a really cool place called Calabash.

Here's @realtor_Gord with garlic shrimp and pidgeon beans and rice at Calabash. Awesome place. http://twitpic.com/jzn4p

Eating curry goat roti and red snapper with @REbroker_Jenn and her hubby @Realtor_Gord at Calabash. http://twitpic.com/jzpbg

Did a tour of  3 Mississauga Royal LePage offices, meeting some great Realtors, checking out their shoes and destressing habits.

At night, we went to a cool comedy play called "Shut up and show us your tweets" at the Second City (yes, the one with John Candy and all of those guys from way back when). It had some great short sketches, and I enjoyed a lot of them, but to be honest, I was disappointed that only the first one really made reference to Twitter. Oh well, we enjoyed it, and went to chat at Wayne Gretzky's next door over some large wings and bruschetta.

A note to anyone ever considering visiting another city for business: find some amazingly kind, friendly, and fun people to tour you around like I did. Jennifer & Gord Rockbourne have been amazing to me. They're Realtors out of Mississauga/Hamilton, and have been introducing me to great people all weekend and showing me the coolest places to eat. Follow them on twitter here:

I also met http://twitter.com/realtor_erica and http://twitter.com/HeatherLeMieux. Super cool people.

Want some more foor shots? Burrito Boys in Port Credit was such a cool experience.

  • Why I love the Flea Market

Ever wondered why it's called a flea market? So have I. But I never found out why. According to the almighty Wikipedia, its origins are unknown, but some speculate it's because people are moving about like fleas, or the more likely explanation, the shoppers and merchandise are all infested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Flea_market

Random: Apparently this tv ad for the Montgomery Flea Market was so popular it made it on the Ellen Show.

Anyway, I wanted to talk about the great finds I picked up today. I went on my weekly Daddy-daughter date with Karen, and she brought her money to buy a toy car from Cars Movie (they're crazy about it and have tonnes of them). She got a combo Lightning McQueen / Sally for $5, marked down from $9. Awesome. I buy razors there, because they are ridiculously cheap. Mach 3 blades are usually a rip off, and I get a pack of 8 for $10. Can't beat that. But why I really love it is because of the records you can find. Today I discovered a $1 section (or 6 for $5). Expecting it to be all garbage, I started flipping through. I was very surprised to have walked away with the following albums/singles for $13:

Bobby McFerrin-Spontaneous Inventions (Thinkin' about your body, Another night in Tunisia with the Manhattan Transfer)
Manhattan Transfer-Mecca for Moderns (already have about 4 of theirs)
    INXS-Kick
Diana Ross-Lady Sings the Blues OMPST
Peter Gabriel-Plays Live (the one with the really weird makeup)
    The B-52s-Love Shack single (yessssss!)
Saturday Night Fever OMPST (already have it, got this for @ErinSolange)
Blue Oyster Cult-Agents of Fortune (yes, the cowbell song)
We are the World (you know the one)
    Phil Collins-No Jacket Required
    James Brown-Froggy remixes
Black Box-Everybody Everybody (come on, I grew up in the 90s)
Milli Vanilli-Girl you know it's true Single (ok, I shouldn't have posted that)
Staying Alive-OMPST (a lot of Bee Gees, I know)
Alan Parsons Project-Eve (I liked one of his other albums, and he produced the Dark Side of the Moon)

Anyway, I highly recommend taking your children on dates, and if you want them to be cheap, go here!

  • 10 Twitter Tips

1-stick to one account, and make it obvious that it is run by a human. You are you, the books, blogs, whatever you sell and do, etc are a part of you. You'll go nuts trying to follow the same people with 10 different accounts, and it won't be as effective. If it builds and you get a feel for it, add more as needed, but you are the brand, the rest are products.

2-fill out your profile completely, especially the website.

3-When you follow someone, try to make it look like you have a reason to. Reply to something they tweeted that is of interest. Ask questions. ENGAGE.

4-Unless they're spam or totally useless, follow people back. Receive email notification of anyone following you so you can reciprocate.

5-interact creatively. As questions. You are actually building relationships with people. Meet as many of them in person as possible. That means following local people and attending and or hosting events they will be at. Everyone loves fundraisers for a local charity. http://twilightYEG.ZoomJer.com

6-Remember that it is just another way to network with people, and if you follow people who might one day be your clients, the business will follow.

7-tweet about your business/expertise/interests and people will see you as the expert and ask questions.

8-use twitpic.com. It is built into many twitter applications so that you can tweet and upload a photo in one shot. Twitpic allows you to see how many times a photo has been viewed, which helps to know what people find interesting. http://twitpic.com/photos/zoomjer

9-shorten links with http://kl.am. You need the space in your tweets, plus you can also see how many people clicked on it (create an account).

10-Be diligent. Once you build momentum, you will start to prefer @replies more than email!

You know I could go on about this for far more than 10 suggestions, so why not add your own?
